GNRC Central Asia
In Central Asia and the Caucasus, the GNRC has concentrated on making new contacts in this oft-ignored region, exploring the potential to work with a variety of partners to facilitate greater awareness and implementation of child rights. In the aftermath of the dissolution of the USSR, this region is characterized by an active and sometimes fragile process of nation-building as well as the re-emergence of original cultures. Children and young people face a complex, changing situation and experience a variety of threats to their well-being.
The GNRC has held several meetings in the region to explore the potential for interfaith cooperation for children. The First Bishkek Dialogue for Children was held from August 26 to September 1, 2003 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, bringing together 19 participants from 15 faith-based community organizations. Prior to that in June 2001, a GNRC meeting was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, attended by more than 50 people of faith, scholars, NGO representatives, and children from Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Georgia and Russia. The participants declared, "The Baku Dialogue has begun a process that will reach out all along the old Silk Road and build a new highway for children."
